The Autograph

The door of Sulmarch House has been breathing open and shut for three days, and Maren Calloway hasn't crossed the threshold yet. She came back because Edda died here. Edda left behind a single page, an autograph signed by an Aldric Voss who shouldn't exist in their family's story. Beneath it, buried in David's journal, in a note by Thomas Wren, in the margins where Edda wrote over her father's words, the truth has been accumulating for years. A truth the Calloway name was built to bury. Maren is not a detective. She is a sister who came to bury one, and found a skeleton of secrets stitched into every document and phone call and guarded memory. Thomas Wren appears in the notes, in the spaces between names, always half-acknowledged, never fully met. David's journal speaks in the past tense of a man who knew exactly what he was hiding. Aldric Voss's signature haunts the original page like a watermark: present, inescapable, unsigned by any living hand. The wind doesn't stop, and Maren is running out of reasons to keep standing on the flagstones. Every family keeps one secret that holds the rest in place. For the Calloways, it was written, signed, and passed hand to hand like a curse. Maren can walk away and let the house cycle its dead air. Or she can step through that three-inch gap, into the dark, and read the autograph for what it is: a confession that, once spoken, cannot be unsaid. If the name the Calloways built on silence finally meets the light, there may be no house left to stand on. No one left to answer the phone. No second sister to bury. The door is open three inches. It will not open further on its own.
