What Sleeps in Harrow Hollow
The bus dies on a pitted lane, and Margot Renfield steps alone into Harrow Hollow, a forgotten village where the locals speak in half-sentences and the church bells have not rung in years. Before sundown, a traveler wades into the gray waters of Veil Lake and is pulled under without a sound, leaving only ripples and a weeping wife. Father Anselm recognizes the signs. So does Lissaveth, the wild-eyed woman who lives among the standing dead trees on the ridge. What sleeps beneath the black water has been bound there for generations, and every protective ward is failing at once. Calvin Thatch, the innkeeper's pragmatic nephew, wants answers he can believe in. Darrin Quill, the postmaster, believes the lake is simply hungry and will keep feeding until it is stopped. As fog swallows the lane and livestock turn up drained in the fields, the villagers are divided between those who would bargain with the Thing in the Blackvein and those who would drive it back into the deep with fire and faith.
