The Severed Crown
A prince kneels before a crown that may already be his undoing. In the great cathedral of amber light and censer smoke, Prince Aelric Vantierre waits to receive the crown of his ancestors , and the weight of a kingdom he does not yet understand. Queen Mother Seraine watches from the shadows of the royal pew, carrying secrets she has held longer than her son has been alive. The Chamberlain moves through the court with quiet precision, arranging men and messages as though the throne itself were a game board. When Vex , a figure out of old songs and older grudges , arrives at the gates on the very eve of coronation, the ceremony becomes a trap, and the crown becomes a question rather than a prize. Aelric is pulled through the crypts beneath the cathedral and the bogs beyond the city walls, where the Marsh Hag speaks in riddles and Marisel the Hedge-Witch trades truths for promises. Tireth the Archivist and the mute scribe Ren tend records the crown would rather see burned. Prince Torvane watches his brother's rise with something colder than envy. General Sten readies the City Guard under Captain Drey's command, and Lady Iola of House Drenvar brings her house's long memory into the reckoning. As a Southern Messenger races north with word that the realm's enemies have stopped waiting, Aelric must decide whether to take the crown, refuse it, or learn what was severed from it , and why. The crown will be lifted. The question is what comes down with it.
