A Crown of Thorns and Vow
The Thornwood Compact was a mistake from the first stroke of the quill. When the Ashborne Crown's armies press against his borders, Lord Vryne signs a desperate treaty with an ancient power, an alliance sealed in bone-white wax that awakens a wraith in the spires. The creature hunts the Vryne bloodline with patient, inhuman hunger, and Lady Vryne's court whispers of madness while the kingdom fractures around them. Caelen Vryne, the lord's son, finds his only ally in an enemy, Prince Soren Ashborne, whose mother Queen Maren Ashborne sent him to ensure the Vrynes never survive the winter. As Caelen and Soren circle each other between duty and desire, the High Oracle reveals the compact's true cost: a crown of thorns binding two houses in blood, with a betrayal already written into its terms. Calder Marrow, a mercenary with secrets of his own, offers a way out, but his price is the one thing the Vrynes cannot surrender. With Ilyana warning of doom and Lucien Ashborne closing in with an army, Caelen must choose whether to honor the vow that is killing his family or shatter it and damn them all. Some pacts can only be paid in crowns.
