The Gravel Beneath Her Wheels
A blowout on Rooster Lane strands Maren Ashcroft on the shoulder of a road no one uses anymore, and the delay costs her something far heavier than the ruined tire. By the time the spare is on, two calls from her sister Hildy Vance have gone unanswered, her father Harlan Ashcroft has stopped picking up entirely, and her brother Jonah Ashcroft has vanished from the family group chat mid-sentence. Something is pulling the Ashcrofts apart from the inside, and the center of it is a document none of them will read aloud: the Greywood Pact. The clauses were drafted before Maren was born, but the obligations fall on her generation to settle. A stranger named Eben Marsh keeps turning up at gas stations and diners along her route, asking the same question in different ways, what did the Ashcrofts promise, and to whom? The only person willing to talk is Tom Greeley, an aging neighbor who helped Harlan bury the original copy and who insists the pact is not a story, not a metaphor, and not something Maren can simply decline to honor. Every mile she drives toward the family homestead tightens the noose: the gravel gives way beneath her wheels in more places than one, the engine cuts out at the worst possible moments, and the weather closes in as if the road itself is deciding who is allowed to arrive. Maren can keep driving, can keep pretending the pact is someone else's problem, or she can stop the van, open the document, and find out what her family sold, and what it will cost her to buy it back.
