A Map of Vanishings
At two in the morning, through the infrared glow of a long lens, Vera Calloway watches the Castellan estate like a patient predator , and waits for someone to vanish. The Southampton mansion has become the epicenter of a string of disappearances among the connected and the wealthy: husbands, heirs, and inconvenient witnesses who walked through its doors and were never seen again. When a new client hires Vera to find what the Castellans are hiding, she discovers that the vanishing is older than the estate itself , and that her own family has been written into its margins. Alongside her sister Lena, the sharp-edged journalist Suki Tanaka, and the disgraced heir Tobias Greer, Vera begins to map the absences: a quiet death in a country house, a fortune laundered through a shipping concern, a marriage that erased a woman from every record she ever touched. Each vanished life is a breadcrumb. Each breadcrumb leads somewhere no one is meant to follow. But the Castellan web does not unravel quietly , and as Vera draws closer, she learns that those who mapped the vanishings before her became vanishings of their own. Now, with the estate's long night closing in and her sister in the crosshairs of those who erase for a living, Vera must finish the map she inherited , or join the names that never made it home.
