The Ash and the Crown
Kael Vryne rides into Ravenhollow with nothing but a scarred jaw, a bad conscience, and a fortnight of refugees churning the gates to mud. Above the town, a sweet-sour haze clings to the rooftops, the breath of something old and wrong stirring beneath the ash. The innkeeper, Bress, pours drinks and silences. Old Sybil watches from her window. Sera Vant, sharper than any blade in the room, presses Kael for the name he's been running from. Beyond the walls, Gate Captain Orun holds the line against a plague he can't explain, while Lady Vesh and her steward move pieces in a game only they can see. Kael came to disappear. Instead, he finds a bone-seller peddling relics of a shattered dynasty, a grandmother's grave-warning he cannot ignore, and a boy named Dael whose eyes hold the memory of a crown that should never be reforged. As Kreel's men close the roads and the ash turns to fire, Kael must choose: burn his secrets to save the town, or keep them and let Ravenhollow become another name for the crow to forget. Some crowns are buried for a reason. Some refuse to stay dead.
