Letters on the Long Road
The mail truck came down the long grade for the last time, and every postmaster in the Willowfen depot heard it before they saw it. Tam Hollerith has driven this route for nineteen years, threading his rattling truck through dust and dusk to deliver the news, the grief, and the ordinary love that travels between the hill towns. Today his daughter Bessie rides beside him, and somewhere in his satchel are letters for them all, Maren Hollowbrook waiting on a word she may never be ready to read, Widow Marnie tending a memory, Pim Quickfingers dodging what he owes, Rook Stonebrook and Wren Pell bound by a silence they cannot break, and Halia Brassmend watching the depot from her porch as she always has. When Tilda Quill and the Quickfingers boy Tammit press their faces to the depot window, and Della, Brook, and the old watchman Cogs count the seconds until the engine falls silent, the question is no longer who Tam Hollerith is, but what will become of a road that no longer carries him.
