The Null Frequency

Maren Voss was supposed to strip a derelict and file the salvage report by morning. She's a Lattice courier in the Dead Zone, past the last relay, past the last licensed transponder, into the black where quantum-locked alloy is the only thing keeping the Lattice from dissolving into static. The Voss network flagged this derelict three days ago. No cargo manifest. No distress beacon. Just a coordinate and a priority tag she's never seen on a network pulse: NULL. The harpoon bites the hull. The alloy resists. And then the null frequency comes through, no carrier, no origin, no wave. A silence that has shape. A signal that shouldn't exist, propagating outward from the derelict's internal architecture like a crack in the quantum lattice. Maren knows what a null frequency does. It doesn't carry information. It erases it. Dax Rennick's equipment is already screaming warnings. Shepherd-Prime is already counting down from a number no one authorized. And in the archive, deep in the network's frozen memory sectors, Kael Voss left a transmission three generations ago that was supposed to be destroyed. Cassian's voice, looping. Orin's coordinates, still warm. The Axiom, which was a chorus of dead signals, is waking and singing in the only frequency that can unmake the rest. Thessa Orin has three hours before the Lattice goes dark across the sector. Maren has less. She can drop the harpoon, back away, let the null frequency propagate and take everything with it. Or she can drive the point six inches deeper, into the architecture where the signal is anchored, and try to kill a frequency that has no carrier to kill it. The alloy is not yielding. Not yet. Not on its own terms.
