The Ashwake
The soil of the Greymarch has not warmed in a generation, and Sera Vosswood is the only person left who remembers how to coax green from it. In Thornwell, a bone of a town perched at the edge of the dead wasteland, Sera tends Aunt Pell's herb garden and presses her palms into cold dirt, listening to what the silverwort whispers. The vines have been silent for twenty years. Then one morning they scream. The screaming cracks the seal of the Three Guardians of the Threshold, and what was sealed away begins to walk. Hesta the Reaper drags her chains through the ash. Vesper Cain the Ashmaker kindles furnaces that turn living things to grey powder. King Aldric Thorne locks his gates; Lord Theron Marwood burns the outer villages to buy time. Maren Grayfen the Witch offers Sera a bargain that tastes like poison, and Brother Branneth Grayvane insists the only answer is obedience. Sera wants none of it. She wants to pull the roots back down, quiet the vines, let the Greymarch sleep again. But the roots answer her now, and they are hungry. They reach for Fen Quickhand, for Corin Vosswood, for Briar the vine-wraith who was her first friend and may be the thing that kills them all. To save the living, Sera must become what the Greymarch fears most: a girl who plants in the dark and calls the roots up into the light. The Ashmaker is already at the threshold. The Reaper is already in the garden. And the soil, for the first time in a generation, is warm.
