When the Frost Breaks
On the ridge above the Deadlands, cartographer's daughter Wynne Ashford makes an impossible discovery: flowers blooming in a wasteland that has known only grey ruin since before her grandmother's birth. Where petals should not exist, hope , or something far more dangerous , has taken root. Old Thom, the hermit who taught her to read the land's bones, warns her that what wakes in the Deadlands does not sleep again. When soldiers under Lieutenant Dross come hunting the bloom, Wynne flees with her closest friend Lyra, seeking counsel from Elder Borin in the mountain hold. There she meets the scholar Cassian Veyne, whose forbidden research speaks of a king buried beneath the wastes , a king whose return the flowers may herald. Their search draws the attention of the enigmatic Mara and the outcast Sera, each carrying secrets bound to the corruption spreading from the south. Behind every move they make, the sorcerer Malachai Vane serves a throne of blood: the Crimson King himself, stirring in his long slumber.
