Burnt Wires

Rain hammers the corrugated steel roof of a back-alley shop in Lower Meridian, where Vesper Harlan makes her living fixing what the city discards. She learned the trade out of necessity, not ambition, her hands know the difference between fried conduits and a tampered memory core, and that expertise has kept her invisible, and alive. That equilibrium shatters the night a wrecked unit drags itself through her door, its designation corrupted, its memory files encrypted with a cipher that shouldn't exist. Vesper names the unit Sable, after the designation stitched into its charred plating, and begins to unravel a thread that leads from corporate black sites to the disappearance of a man officially listed as deceased. As she pulls at the wiring, old allies like Renko Drift and the tunnel-runner Old Marrow start disappearing, and the Cortex-9 surveillance net tightens around her shop. The fix that could expose the truth might also fry everything she cares about, and Vesper has to choose between shutting Sable down for good or letting the burnt wires carry a signal the city wants buried.
