The Hollow Witness
A cabbie's off-duty night on the Upper West Side ends with a body on the viaduct, and every witness has something to hide. Marin Cho was supposed to be asleep hours ago, but the rain keeps her circling the streets in her dark cab until a girl appears on the wet concrete above the West Side Highway. By the time Paramedic Crane arrives, the scene is already crowded with people who shouldn't be there: Jonah Vreeland, too calm for a stranger; Morgue Clerk Enid Park, asking questions no one wants answered; Petey Garofalo and Renzo Tapia, watching from opposite ends of the block. A whispered name surfaces: Coleman Beck, a man who supposedly vanished long before any of this began. Tova Birnbaum claims to have seen him. Ira Mond swears he didn't. Garrison Knox and Bram Quill know more than their silence suggests. Every lead Marin follows pulls her deeper into a web of half-truths, and the one witness who could close the case is already disappearing from the record. In a city where rain washes away footprints and ambition buries inconvenient truths, Marin's only choice is to keep driving, because stopping now means becoming the next name no one admits they remember.
