The Drowned Hours
Three years after Harrow Creek swallowed her sister and watched her drive away, Mara Elliston turns off the ignition at the edge of a gravel lot and feels the town press against her chest like a held breath. The creek has risen since the funeral. Porches disappear beneath black water, and the houses along the waterline stand patient and half-drowned, their windows lit by something that is not electricity. Determined to settle her family estate before the winter roads close, Mara moves into the old Elliston house and tells herself she is only here long enough to sign papers. But Harrow Creek is not finished with the Elliston women. Her aunt Lena greets her at the door with a warning she refuses to repeat aloud. Dolores Krieger, the keeper of the creek-side ledger, claims the drowned do not rest here , they are kept. Daniel Vasik warns her away from the basement. Ruth Alderman, who lost her own daughter to the current, insists the water speaks in her sleep. As the drowned hours lengthen and the rain refuses to stop, Mara begins to hear what the creek is saying , and discovers that the family she came to bury has been waiting, beneath the surface, for her to come home.
