The Hollow Saints

Cora Vance swings off the mail truck at the four-way stop where County Road 12 meets what Stillwater Bend calls its main street, and the gravel crunches under her boots like the town itself is holding its breath. She's come for an inheritance, a house, a journal belonging to her mother Hettie, and photographs that show things that shouldn't be possible. What she didn't know: the town has been waiting for her. Sheriff Dale Merritt drives her to the house with his window down and his eyes on the road. Pastor Enoch Bray meets her at the door with a cup of coffee and a look that says he's already decided what she'll become. Deputy Marcus Tate won't meet her eyes, and when she asks about his sister, the Woman in Black he saw on the road two years ago, he says nothing at all. The house is the first thing that speaks to Cora. Not in words. In the creak of a floorboard that isn't settling, the smell of iron and sage from a room Hettie sealed shut, the sound of a child humming in a basement where no child should be. The Hollow Saint has been here since before Hettie was born, a thing the old families called the Listener, a shapeless hunger that takes on the likeness of the dead to move among the living. It wore Hettie's face for eleven years before the woman put it to rest. Or thought she did. Della Fisk, the town's last unshackled witness, presses a brass key into Cora's palm and tells her to stay one night. One night is all Hettie survived. But one night isn't enough to outrun a thing that's been listening through the walls for three generations, and the journal Hettie left behind ends mid-sentence, the ink still wet, the last entry a single name: Cora. She can burn the house, scatter the ledger, and drive north until the corn stops. Or she can open the final page, say the name aloud, and learn what Hettie Vance knew on the last night she ever lived. The Hollow Saint is patient. It has been patient for a very long time. And it has just found the face it's been waiting to wear.
