The Glass Witness
Three days of unrelenting rain have flooded the Pearl District's cobblestones, and forensic cleaner Sasha Mireille is about to walk into the kind of crime scene that ruins careers. The Cordova Building's second-floor landing is sterile perfection, except for the body, and the young uniformed officer whose latex-gloved hands will not stop trembling. Detective Jonas Quill calls her because Sasha sees what uniformed cops and ambitious detectives cannot: the smudge on the baseboard, the half-wiped glass, the lie in the angle of a chair. As she begins her work, a fragile witness vanishes before he can be questioned. The building's polished tenants, an enigmatic art collector, his guarded sister Lila, a financier with secrets, and a doorman who knows too much, begin to close ranks. The deeper Sasha digs, the more the case tilts toward her own past, one she has spent years scrubbing clean. When a second witness disappears and the rain finally stops, the city dries, the cobblestones gleam, and Sasha must decide whether to walk away with her silence intact or testify to what only she witnessed behind it.
