Maren Castillo is counting down the final hours of another graveyard shift at Ridgeback Tower when her radio crackles with a terrified voice. Benny Vargas, alone on the Vine Street Expressway at 1 a.m., has spotted pale, eyeless figures gathering on the overpass above him. As Maren listens, the line dies. Across Philadelphia, the reports multiply: drivers stranded on I-676, a diner under siege, TSA agents at PHL fleeing something that looks almost human. Pale, emaciated creatures the survivors call the Hollow are spilling out of forgotten corners of the city, replacing the living with empty-eyed doubles and dragging the taken into the concrete veins beneath the streets. Officer Reeves and Officer Donato respond to calls that no longer make sense. Dr. Idris Onuoha watches the data turn impossible. Mayor Patricia Hargrove and her chief of staff weigh an evacuation that would expose what lurks in the city's shadows. Theo Park, Yael Brennan, and the frightened patrons of an all-night diner barricade themselves in while a Hollow Queen rises. Far to the west, Caleb Yoder, his mother, and Sandra Kroll's miners learn that the outbreak has not stopped at city limits. As the night deepens, every survivor is forced to choose whether to run, fight, or surrender the ones they love. Maren and Benny face one final race through a city that is no longer theirs, knowing that whoever reaches the bunker may still not be who they appear to be.
