At 0347, cycle 2,913, the needle on seismograph four jumps to the red band , and holds. Maren Voss, driller aboard the ice-boring vessel Promethean Deep, expects a tectonic fracture. What she gets is a pattern: rhythmic, deliberate pulses rising from eleven kilometers beneath the ice sheet, where nothing alive should remain. Xenobiologist Rhen Salazar recognizes the cadence as language. Communications officer Cassius Wren traces it to a frequency the station was never tuned to receive. Expedition lead Kael Orin insists on pushing the drill deeper, bound by a backer whose interest is not scientific. Ice geologist Yuki Tanaka finds evidence the formation is far older than the planet itself , a borrowed fragment embedded in the world like a splinter beneath skin. As the signal grows louder, the crew's instruments begin to fail, their dreams begin to converge, and the ice begins to thin. Maren must choose between sealing the bore and walking away with a mystery unsolved, or answering the call and letting something surface that has spent millennia learning how to listen.
