Embers Beneath the Ice

The helicopter shudders, then steadies, and volcanologist Lena Marlowe sees her assignment for the first time: a cluster of prefab buildings clinging to a ridge in the Karkonosze Mountains, swallowed by a whiteout so fierce the pilot nearly misses the pad. The caldera station is her first solo posting, and Lena intends to prove she is more than her late mentor's shadow. Waiting for her is Viktor Kasper, the station's reserved lead researcher, whose calm authority masks a past he refuses to discuss, and a team already fraying at the seams , Piotr, pragmatic and exhausted; Halina, sharp-tongued and grieving; Anika, young and hiding a dangerous secret; the Bukowskis, bound by an old betrayal; and Marek, whose loyalty is suddenly in question. Cut off by blizzards, the crew turns inward, and what surfaces is more volatile than magma: an affair between Lena and Viktor that ignites despite every professional boundary, a cover-up surrounding a past accident at the station, and the suspicion that someone on the team knows exactly what is buried in the rock.
