The piston rings are done, and the last of the gas will die on a two-hundred-mile stretch of back road where no one stops. Silas Dunne knows this because the Civic just told him in a grinding, metallic cough that there is no going back. What he doesn't know yet is that the broken car is the least of his problems. They contain names, dates, and transactions that explain why Gerald was buried quietly, why no one from the family attended the funeral, and why Dale Briggs has been making careful phone calls to numbers that aren't in the phone book. Tommy Vane appears at the scene not as a helper but as an observer, his eyes cataloguing what he sees with the patience of a man who has been waiting. Sheriff Callum Voss pulls up with a promise of assistance that carries the weight of something else entirely, an interrogation dressed in concern. And Mara Ketch, who shows up with a truck and a flat affect, is the one person who hands Silas the keys to understanding what Gerald really was and what he was protecting. But the journal has a final page, deliberately torn out, and its absence is a knife held to everyone's throat. The more Silas reads, the more he realizes the dead uncle's secrets have a living heartbeat, and it's beating in more than one chest. When the choice comes, and it will come before the sun fully sets, Silas has to decide who to believe, whose story to stake his life on, and whether the truth Gerald left behind is something worth surviving or something that will swallow him whole.
