Grease and Grace

The dented hood of a pickup truck ticks in the July heat on Mulberry Street, and Wren Calloway knows the small town around her is running out of road. The paint peels off the barber shop awning. The tabby cat in the feed store window has decided to sleep through the end of things. And Wren, who has spent her whole life working with her hands in oil and rust, has one more summer before the grease finally wins. She is not alone in the decay. Bev Mallory holds the corner of the town with a stubbornness that borders on self-destruction. Hank Calloway carries a grief so old it has worn smooth. Marcus Lee keeps picking up the phone for a future that keeps not being there. Dale Prescott has been playing a twenty-year con on everyone, including himself. Ed Hartley says nothing and the silence is its own kind of confession. Theo Marsh is leaving, or staying, or neither, and nobody is sure which. Gene Patterson is close to a reckoning he's been outrunning since he was a kid. And Nora Sutton, sharp and furious, is the one person who looks Wren in the eye and says the word she's been dodging: grace. The town is a machine with too many parts worn to metal-on-metal, and Wren has been the one keeping it running on stubbornness and motor oil. But the heat is rising, the storefronts are rippling, and the key is under the mat , not under the truck, under the mat, where she left it years ago when the whole thing still made sense. When the last store on Mulberry Street goes dark, Wren must choose: drive the dented pickup out before the town becomes a postcard nobody visits, or stay, grease-stained and grace-stained, and help these people hold the street one more summer. Either way, the ticking stops. One way she runs. The other way she finally lets the engine idle, and listens to what the quiet is trying to tell her.
