The Last Blade-Song has been running for eleven minutes, and the first hairline fracture has just split the air above Thornreach. Kaelen Voss stands at the outermost edge of the northern battlement, the ancient longsword of the Thornbound held not in his grip but crossed before his chest, its pommel pressed against his sternum like a second heart. The stone bites through his boots. Above, the sky hangs the color of bruised plums and is beginning to crack. The blade-song is the last binding the Thornbound ever forged, and it is failing. Somewhere below, Lord Cael's war-horns are calling the breach. Soren Ashveil, the order's final archivist, has sent word that the song cannot be stopped once started, only finished. Thessaly and Maren hold the lower passages with fractured shields and bleeding hands. Drevan and Bran seal the eastern gate. Vaelthar sings counter-melodies that make the flagstones shudder beneath Kaelen's feet. What Kaelen does not know is what the completed song will cost. The Thornbound swore the blade would protect. But protection and destruction share the same geometry, and the fractures spreading above are only the first proof. The song runs long. Lord Cael is close. The sword's pulse against his chest is slowing. Kaelen must finish the Last Blade-Song before the sky tears open entirely, or stop, let the binding rot, and watch Thornreach fall silent in the dark. Every note he adds fractures the world further. Every silence he holds lets the seal dissolve. He must choose: complete the song and risk unmaking everything the Thornbound swore to guard, or let the blade die cold against his sternum and become the last man who never finished a song.
