The Ash Ledger

by Hugo Ember

Four fires. One ledger. And a name that shouldn't exist. Maren Voss lives above a laundromat in unit three, where the plaster has been cracked since February and the only thing that shakes the floor is the Maytag's centrifugal spin. She's not a cop. She's not a journalist. She's the kind of woman who reads the fine print in insurance claims for a living, and she notices things others file away. Like the waterlogged ledger tucked under the floorboards of a burned-out storage unit. Like the fact that three of the last four structure fires in the district shared the same fuel supplier. The Ash Ledger is handwritten in a cramped, left-handed script, its pages brittle with soot. Each entry logs a date, a location, a loss, not in dollars, but in names. The losses are people. The names are disappearing. By the time Maren reaches the fourth smoke, the pattern is no longer a hunch. Someone has been running a quiet, methodical campaign of controlled burns to erase a string of witnesses, and the ledger is the only record that ties them together. But the final page is missing, and the script switches hands. The last entry isn't in the original writer's hand. It's in someone else's. Someone who knows Maren's name. She can hand the book to a precinct that already walked the first three calls, or she can follow the missing page into the one district where the fire marshal's office has no phone line and the cops stop at the border. The ash is still warm. The fifth fire hasn't happened yet. And the name in the margins is getting closer.
