Jack Pellam counts everything. One rope, one groan, one turn of the winch handle. The hollow ledger is empty on purpose. Every account that should be in it has been erased, and the man who held it was killed to keep it that way. But Jack has been counting for four months. He knows what's missing when a page is blank. He knows the weight of an empty record. And now Rita Chen, Gerald Finch, and Thomas Wren, names scattered across the harbor's oldest debts, are starting to surface, one by one, like bodies the water keeps spitting back. Ashford doesn't forgive. It waits. And when Jack finally opens that ledger to the last page, he'll have to choose: bury the numbers and keep breathing, or count them out loud and let the whole town hear the sound of the water closing over his head.
