When the letter arrives at cubicle 7-D beneath a fluorescent light that hasn't worked properly in three weeks, Wren Calloway learns she has inherited her estranged grandfather's crumbling estate in the dying rust-belt town of Hollow Creek, along with a mountain of debt and a deadline she can't afford to miss. Returning means confronting Uncle Bo Calloway, who stayed behind and resented her for leaving, and Sheriff Edie Pritchard, who greets her at the property line with paperwork and a warning. Local developer Hank Morrison is circling the estate with bulldozers and city permits backed by Mayor Lawrence Dutton, but reclusive neighbor Pearl Delacroix insists the land holds something the town buried decades ago, something Marcus Webb and the state inspector have been sent to keep sealed.
