The Glass Ledger
Harlan Devereaux built an empire on other people's secrets, and died clutching a glass ledger no one can read. Eleven days after the Lakefront penthouse murder, Detectives Ruiz and Okafor are still bent over a thermal printout, watching its numbers dissolve into static every time the light hits it. Their only lead is a single cryptic notation pointing toward Mara Voss, a woman Devereaux had quietly bankrolled for reasons the city's financial elite will not explain. Each door Ruiz knocks on swings back toward Alderman Piotr Voss, Mara's powerful uncle, whose name flickers in the margins of a dozen sealed investigations. As the detectives trace the ledger's path through a shadow network of fixer Dax Kline, reluctant witness Yuki Tanaka, and forensic accountant Dr. Felix Hargrove, who seems to know more than he's willing to admit, they uncover a scheme so vast that exposing it could collapse the city's most powerful figures or bury the detectives under the wreckage. With a second body found in a downtown office tower and the printout fading in the evidence locker, Ruiz and Okafor must decide: solve the case and ignite a public catastrophe, or let the numbers stay buried and protect the only family Mara Voss has left.
