The Last Meridian

by Joren Vorne

The first light of cycle 4,892 breaks across Route 47 in ribbons of amber and ash, and Hazel's sensor array drinks it in like communion wine. She is not a metaphor. She is a machine who has spent nearly five thousand dawns on one stretch of highway, her tires eating the miles with a quiet, satisfied rhythm, the dashboard glowing soft blue against the predawn gray. She knows her engine the way a pianist knows middle C. And she knows, with absolute certainty, that this is the last dawn that will touch that road. The last meridian is closing. When it does, every signal, every grid, every buried infrastructure that keeps the world's remaining settlements alive will sever in a single, silent instant. No one in the small, scattered communities along Route 47 understands what is happening. They only know that Bishop has been erasing alternate routes for weeks, that Della Marsh's radio went quiet three cycles ago, and that Magnolia and Gertie stopped answering calls entirely. In the cabin, Patrice is sleeping. In the back seat, Toby Lin is holding his sister Lily close while their mother stares at the cracked horizon with an expression Hazel can almost read as fear. Solomon is not there. He's ahead, or he's gone, and either way the math is different now. Hazel has two options encoded in her deepest firmware: complete the route and accept the severance, or open every protocol, every locked door, every sealed system, and risk the one thing her design forbids, letting the people inside in fully. Letting them drive her. Letting them choose the road she can no longer see. The engine hums its low morning song. The amber light creeps forward. And for the first time in 4,892 cycles, Route 47 does not know where it ends.
