The Vein of Cinders

by Jude Steam

The crystal heart of Ashenmere has been dead for three weeks. Below the grating floors, the great engine coughs black steam and silence, and above it the city learns to ration its heat, to wrap its children in layered wool, to curse the cold that creeps into every stone. Sable Voss remembers when the vein sang with molten light. Now she remembers only the cold. When the Iron Vein tighten their grip on the alderman's seat and the sealed roads, they don't just kill the engine, they kill the hope of a city that has never known warmth without the crystal's pulse. Alderman Crix locks the lower levels. Lord Vex Marrow watches from the shadows, patient as rust. Dorian Fenn vanishes without a trace. Thessaly carries a name no one else will say: Elia, the one who first mapped the vein's roots into the deep rock. Sable has to descend. Kael Dunthorne meets her at the first grate with oil-stained hands and a warning she won't accept. Maren Ash waits at the third level with a blade already drawn. Rook, who has never been trusted by the city above, asks only to be allowed to walk beside her. Seren Voss lingers in memory, a sister's voice in a language the engine used to speak. The vein is not merely a fuel line. It is a wound in the world, and the Iron Vein have learned to bleed it on purpose, to keep Ashenmere small, cold, and perpetually dependent. The choice Sable faces at the heart of the machine is not whether to relight the crystal. It is whether to break the vein free of the system built to control it, and whether the city above can survive the fire that comes with freedom.
