The Iron Meridian
The neural-link hum died at 0400 hours on cycle 2,147, and Maren Sol is the only technician on the maintenance platform who felt it in her teeth before the silence swallowed the rest of the crew. Five cortical jacks. Five shared minds. Now four eyes flicker with cerulean and one pair stays dark, Maren's, and the network registered her dropout as a hostile event. Commander Dren Ashford's Iron Meridian protocol was designed to bind conscription rotations through synchronized awareness: no individual thought, no solo initiative, no deviation. But the Cartographer, a ghost in the sub-layer of the grid, has been stitching a second frequency beneath the official one, and Maren is its first unplanned passenger. What she hears on that hidden channel makes the synchronized silence of the platform feel like the calmest room in a burning building. Her route off the platform leads through Oren Thatch, who still has a working jack and a grudge against the rotation that took his mother's research. It leads to Dr. Elowen Thatch, the original architect of the neural-link lattice, now locked in a medical bay on Ashford's personal ward. It leads to Yara Chen in comms, Kael Draven in security, and Davan Rook in the maintenance tunnels where the old infrastructure still carries signals the Meridian was never meant to touch. Every checkpoint Maren passes narrows the corridor of choice. Ashford's enforcement teams converge on the Cartographer's signal. Oren can either feed Maren coordinates or burn his own jack to deny them. The Cartographer offers one exit: a full severance that leaves Maren unlinked, unshared, and invisible to the grid that defined every conscious moment of her life. Or she can reseat the jack, accept the rewrite, and carry the fracture inward while the Iron Meridian closes the line behind her. The meridian holds. Or it doesn't. Maren has to decide which side of it she's standing on before the next hum finds her teeth.
