The Cartographer of Burnt Suns
Vesper Ryland is a cartographer , one of the last remaining aboard Polaris Station, a relic of an age when humans still charted the burning heavens from brass observation domes. As the station's mechanisms grind toward silence and the stars it was built to study slip into extinction, she discovers a phantom sun that no map has ever recorded: a living star hidden behind a system the cartographers' guild declared dead centuries ago. Word of the discovery reaches the outer sectors. Lady Yanna Cressari, an exiled noble whose house once ruled the dying systems, sends Edran Solis to negotiate for the chart. Talia Venn, Vesper's apprentice, refuses to abandon the old maps even as the universe they describe burns away around her. Dax Imara and Torin Osen arrive as rivals , one seeking the chart to weaponize it, the other to suppress it forever. Kaelen Drust believes the phantom sun marks the place his missing sister, Maren Drust, was last seen alive. With Polaris Station failing and its observation dome breathing its last mechanical breath, Vesper must choose: surrender the chart and let the old order survive, or publish the truth and ignite a war for the last habitable worlds. The burnt suns, she realizes, were never really burnt. And the future is far less finished than anyone dared to chart.
