Against the Waning

Maren Solvik has been alone on Oria-9 for three months, wiping condensation off a cracked observation port and telling herself the silence is company. When the relief vessel docks and Idris Kael steps through the airlock, the math Maren built for ninety days of solitude collapses in a single breath. He is not supposed to be on this rotation. She is not supposed to feel the temperature in the compartment change when he talks. Oria-9 is dying around them, and the only protocol that keeps them alive requires two people to operate the manual shutdown sequence, a sequence that also demands two people sit in the same chamber, in the dark, for eleven hours while the station bleeds out. Dax Renn is unavailable. Sina Solvik, Maren's sister, is a hundred light-years away and unreachable. There is no third option. Every hour in that chamber narrows the space between what Maren swore she was and what Idris Kael is already making her feel. Osei's orders are clear: priority is the station, not the people aboard it. Voss's medical log says the waning is irreversible. The clock is running. If Oria-9 loses primary power before the sequence completes, both of them die in a sealed room with no one to find them. If Maren lets her guard down for even one minute, she loses the composure she has bled to keep. The waning isn't just the station.
