The Resonance Protocol

by Orion Blake

At 0500 hours, cycle 1,847, a deep-space listening array on the edge of human territory intercepts a signal that cannot exist. Dr. Mira Voss, a veteran radio astronomer stationed at the remote Tessera-9 observatory, watches her calibration curves collapse into something impossible , a coherent transmission pulsing from beyond the heliopause, encoded in a physics the galaxy should not allow. Within hours, her discovery reaches Director Halis Yuen, who sees not wonder but leverage, and Admiral Iola Sael, who sees a threat that must be answered with force if it cannot be answered with diplomacy. Recruited against her instincts, Mira is paired with Rafe Castellan, a disgraced ex-mission commander whose last expedition ended in classified silence, and Dr. Saul Peretz, whose models say the signal is not a message at all but a key. Engineer Tova Markham fights to repair the array as it begins to resonate in ways no one authorized, and the station itself becomes the instrument of a protocol no one fully understands. Each attempt to decode the transmission tightens its grip. Each choice ripples outward to fleets already repositioning in the dark. As the resonance builds, Mira must decide whether to transmit the response the protocol demands , and whether the answer coming back is an invitation, a warning, or something humanity is not yet prepared to survive.
