Refraction Point

by Sloane Mirror

Vera Kole has spent her life in the shadow of her grandmother's mysterious work, sorting through antique instruments in a colony where every breath is recycled and every silence is earned. The humidity processors hum their constant drone, the air tastes of copper and age, and the only thing that makes the quiet bearable is Vera's scanner, a salvaged sensor unit she runs over the station's infrastructure the way other children run through fields. She is searching for something. She has always been searching, even if she doesn't yet know what. When a routine sweep picks up an anomalous reading buried deep in the station's core systems, Vera follows the signal into the sealed workroom her grandmother forbade her to enter. What she finds there is not machinery. It is a pattern. A language encoded into the station itself, repeating in frequencies just below human hearing, waiting. The deeper Vera scans, the more the colony's familiar hum begins to feel like breath on the back of her neck. Someone, or something, has been listening to the colonists for generations, and her grandmother wasn't just a researcher. She was a responder. Now the signal is changing, the sealed rooms are unlocking, and Vera must decide whether to shut the channel forever or finally speak back.
