Where We Left the Story

by Rowan Vex

Eight years after fleeing Chapel Lane, Lila Ashford is pulled back by an inheritance letter that names a cottage she was never supposed to return to. The ferry horn splits the grey morning; the salt-stiffened rope slaps the bow; she steps onto the same weathered timber where she and her sister Gwen once picked strawberries and whispered that the stories lining every wall were real. They weren't pretending anymore. The cottage's legacy is tangled in old debts, old loyalties, and a family name, Thackeray, that still carries weight on the lane. Julian Thackeray is there, waiting, his patience worn to the thread of the very stories Lila swore she'd outgrown. Ines Carrington, Margot Ellery, and the rest of the village have kept the cottage's secrets warm for eight years, and none of them let Lila believe she can simply walk back onto the pier and pick up the narrative where she dropped it. Theo Wren and Callum Reed each want a piece of the inheritance, and Mrs. Pemberton's letter has set clocks ticking that don't stop for anyone. Mira Vance guards the garden as if it were a wound. Gwen's signature at the bottom of that letter is the only thread pulling Lila toward staying. The strawberry rows are overgrown. The walls still hold the stories. But the tale Lila and Julian once wrote in ink and whispered by the fire has been rewritten by everyone else in the room, and the final page is blank. Lila has twenty chapters left to decide whether to finish the story as it was meant to be told, or tear out the last page and walk back onto the ferry into a life that is no longer hers. Either way, the story will end. The question is whether it ends with her name on it.
