Where the Saltgrass Grows

The October sky over Thornhaven is a single sheet of pewter, pressing the light flat against the stone and salt marsh, and Clara Ashford hasn't opened her portfolio in three years. She came back to the cliff-town where her mother, Margot Ashford, built a life the family never spoke of, carrying only a zipper caught on dried sea buckthorn and a grief she cannot name. Dr. Felix Voss has been Thornhaven's physician for two decades, mending the town's small bones and keeping its secrets in lockstep. When Clara walks the wattle-fenced path down to the sea, he is there, and the familiarity of it undoes something she thought she'd buried. The Voss family, including Felix's brother Julian, has been woven into Thornhaven's history for generations, and what the salt marsh keeps, the living are too polite to dig up. Elsie Whitmore, Nora Chen, and Thomas Bell orbit the town's small social life like stones in a current, each holding a fragment of the past Clara needs to see her mother clearly. The closer Clara gets to understanding what Margot left behind in Thornhaven, the more the ground shifts beneath the saltgrass. Felix offers a kind of shelter that is also a kind of cage: if she stays, the past will keep rewriting her until she can bear it, or she will have to let it keep her. If she leaves, she takes the flat grey sky back with her, the two-dimensional light where nothing has depth or consequence. The cliff path bends again. The portfolio's zipper catches.
