Iron Vespers
When the midnight chime sounds through the operations bunker for the six hundredth time, comms operator Dara Onn lifts the receiver expecting routine. Instead, a stranger's hoarse voice on the other end of the Vesper relay carries news of a breach that every flag officer in the system has agreed to ignore. At the edge of settled space, the relay is the last listening post before the dark , a forgotten outpost where signals arrive from regions no ship has returned from. When the breach becomes impossible to deny, the chain of command fractures. Admiral Laskaris wants it buried. Governor Ibañez wants it weaponized. Sub-Commander Yuen wants it solved before either of them can act. Into the gap step the people no one sends on purpose: Vera Kesslarin, a signals analyst who hears patterns the brass refuse to read; Aaron Drift, a civilian contractor with too many questions about his own cargo manifest; and Maren Foss, a junior officer whose loyalty is the only currency she has left. Beside them, the enigmatic Pel Tok and the haunted Otho Vrell carry secrets that predate the present crisis. As the breach widens and the relay's silence grows expensive, every transmission becomes a choice. Speak, and the war arrives tonight. Stay quiet, and whatever is coming arrives on its own schedule. For Dara Onn and the others, the answer will be measured not in messages sent, but in the people who never come back.
