The Borrowed Mile
At 11:47 p.m. on a stretch of empty interstate, long-haul trucker Maren Holloway logs another shift under the broken fluorescent of bay four, her hands moving on autopilot while the dying tube counts pulses above her chrome Peterbilt. The rhythm should anchor her, but tonight, something is wrong with the odometer, and a woman in a pale coat is waiting on a road that leads nowhere. By the time Maren realizes the passenger stepped into her rig without ever opening the door, the mile counter has already begun to climb in the wrong direction. Dispatch's voice on the radio shifts between operators who died years ago. Voicemails from Jed Castro arrive from a number that hasn't existed in a decade. Dashcam footage shows her rig on highways that haven't been built yet, carrying a child who shouldn't exist. As the borrowed mile stretches across vanished towns and erased drivers, Maren discovers that the pale passenger is counting too, tallying debts owed to a man named Cassius Holloway who died before she was born. With each mile accumulated, the boundary between what Maren remembers and what was never meant to be remembered thins. She must choose whether to drive the final mile herself, or surrender the wheel to the passenger who has been riding along since before the truck ever left the lot.
