The Calculus of Consent
A body in the fog outside an Uptown theater is the kind of case Cole Vance usually avoids, messy, political, and guaranteed to offend the wrong people. But when defense attorney Petra Solano hires him to look closer, Cole steps under the sodium vapor glow of Argyle and Winthrop and finds something the police missed: a man whose death wasn't an accident, wasn't a robbery, and wasn't random. As Cole follows the evidence from backroom deals to cold lakeside cottages, he keeps crossing paths with Miriam Halloran, whose evasive answers suggest she knows exactly who wanted the man dead, and why. The deeper Cole digs, the more the trail points toward The Rationalist, a fixer who trades in leverage and has no apparent interest in being found. With allies like Detective Wic Kealoha offering thin cover and informants like Lucia Quintero feeding him fragments, Cole pieces together a conspiracy that turns ordinary people into unwilling players. But every step forward tightens the noose around the people Cole was hired to protect, forcing him to weigh the cost of truth against the price of silence. In a city where consent is bought and sold one favor at a time, Cole must decide whose debts get paid, and whose don't survive the settlement.
