The Cartography of Forgotten Things

The last box arrived three days after Eleanor Vance vanished, and nobody at the Cedar Falls Municipal Archive opened it. Now the archive itself is fading, a squat brick building wedged between a defunct insurance office and a barbershop whose striped pole hasn't turned in years, and when its new custodian Maren Holst finally breaks the brass seal, she finds not old records, but a map drawn in invisible ink, pointing toward decades of municipal sins. Across twenty years of tangled paperwork, Vance had been quietly cataloguing the powerful: corrupt deals, buried court rulings, a developer named Arthur Vance whose name keeps surfacing where it shouldn't, and Judge Helena Cho, whose rulings suddenly make terrible sense. Director Whitfield wants the box filed and forgotten. Lillian Park, a sharp-eyed local journalist, wants it weaponized for a story. Sam Okonkwo, a reclusive map collector, recognizes Vance's cipher and offers his help at a price. As deadlines loom and bulldozers circle, Maren must decide whether to expose the truth the town has agreed to forget, or surrender Eleanor's final act of witness and let the past stay buried.
