The Cartography of Small and Forgotten Things

Wren Hartwell knows the Royal Cartographic Office the way a sailor knows a familiar coastline: by the soft complaints of its floorboards, the smell of beeswax and old vellum, the particular slant of light through high windows before the other archivists arrive. She is a mapper of small things, property lines, parish boundaries, forgotten footpaths, and she prefers it that way. Until the morning she finds a locked drawer that does not appear on any blueprint of the building, and inside it, a map that should not exist. The places it depicts are not on any chart. Some of them feel like memories Wren has never had. A teahouse proprietor named Old Marta offers cryptic counsel. A fellow archivist, Aldric Penne, begins trading her glimpses of the truth in exchange for help she does not yet understand. A scholar named Dame Octavia Quill recognizes a symbol in the margins and pales. And everywhere, threaded through the clues, is the name of a man who should not still be drawing breath: Lord Silas Mereworth, whose dominion was supposed to have ended with the war. As Wren follows the map deeper, through letters from her dead mother, journals kept by a woman called Elara Vance, and the watchful eyes of a cat who seems to know far too much, she begins to suspect that the forgotten places on the map are not gone. They are waiting. And someone is very determined that no one redraw their borders. To map what should have stayed buried, Wren will have to risk her place, her apprenticeships, and the quiet life she built to keep grief at bay. The question is no longer whether she will finish the map. It is what will finish her first.
