The Cartography of Unintended Places

Wren Thistlecrane sinks into the mud of Briarfen marsh-town the moment she steps off the ferry, and the town proves just as treacherous as its footing. She has come searching for her father, a mapmaker whose charts documented places that don't appear on any official survey, locations that shift when observed, vanish from memory, and defy the neat geometry of the Recorder Haddon Vex. The townsfolk seem uneasy, forgetful, and strangely unwilling to speak of things they clearly remember. Mayor Dunstan Roe greets her with polished evasion, Bess the Innkeeper offers warmth laced with warning, and Pim Mosswhistle seems to know more than anyone about the erased places on Briarfen's fringes. As Wren pieces together her father's coded maps and the strange correspondence he left behind, she attracts the attention of Recorder Vex, an officious man whose bureaucratic power conceals something far older and far more dangerous. When the Eraser arrives to enforce a final correction, Wren must choose: flee with the truth she has gathered, or stay and fight for a town that has already begun to forget itself. With the help of Calla Brine, the enigmatic Dr. Saoirse Quill, the woodsman Tam Birchwood, the innkeeper's sharp-eyed niece Maren Crumb, her steadfast dog Compass, and an opinionated beetle named Atticus, Wren races to chart the unmappable before the map is burned, and everyone who remembers it is made to disappear.
