The Hollow Saints
Maren Ashcroft returns to Saint Idlewild for the first time in fifteen years, chasing the silence where her sister Lenna once was. The bus wheezes into a town that looks like it has been forgetting itself for decades: a depot leaning off its foundations, a water tower rusted the color of old blood, and a chapel whose saints wear expressions no carpenter ever intended. Maren has questions. Saint Idlewild has none, only the practiced quiet of Mrs. Grae, the redirecting kindness of Sheriff Tobin Hask, and the watchful patience of Father Dowd, whose sermons never quite name what they protect. Even the town's doctor, Vesta Marrow, and the traveling journalist Quill Grimani seem to orbit the same unspoken center, while the herbalist Nuala Pyle mutters warnings no one wants translated. As Maren uncovers records of neighbors who vanished, marriages arranged in haste, and a bell tower that stopped ringing the year her sister did, the hollow saints begin to turn their empty faces toward her. The town has kept its bargain for generations: offerings in the chapel, silence in the streets, prosperity earned at a cost no one will admit. Maren can leave while the road still accepts her, or she can pry open the saint's mouth and learn what her sister swallowed. Either way, Saint Idlewild intends to be paid.
