On a bruised-lavender dawn in Briarford, Vermont, librarian Evelyn Marsh finds a slumped cardboard box on the library's back step. Inside, beneath yellowed papers and the smell of old tobacco, lies an unpublished manuscript that names a killer no one in town has ever acknowledged. As Evelyn cross-references the confession against four decades of local memory, old wounds split open across Briarford, wounds involving her own late grandfather, Samuel Marsh, and a grieving widow named Iris Tilden who has waited half a lifetime for someone to listen. Sheriff Dale Pruitt wants the file buried. Town clerk Hollis Crane insists the story is fiction. And somewhere in the shadows, a figure locals call The Watcher begins leaving Evelyn notes that prove he knows exactly what she's found. With only the cautious counsel of her mentor Margaret Yu and the begrudging help of retired detective Hank Bremer, Evelyn must untangle a web of small-town silence stretching back to a night in 1984, before the manuscript's anonymous author, or the secrets it exposes, silences her too. Because in Briarford, mercy has always had a margin, and some debts are never meant to be repaid.
