The Salt and the Thorn

by Talulah Voodoo

The archive smells of salt. Maren Holloway knows it the moment she pries a loose tile from the flagstone and unearths a journal that should have burned with its owner , Vyrn the Cartographer, whose maps showed places no compass could reach and whose body was never recovered from the tide. Bound by a contract Vyrn signed in his own blood, Maren inherits his unfinished work, and with it, the attention of Lord Vell Orris, a lord who rules the coast through brine-shaped horrors, tree-children of living wood, and the shadows of men long since drowned. As Maren traces Vyrn's last route from the cliffs to the inland Thorn, she is joined by Old Bennick, whose warnings no one heeded; Dessa Korrin, a smuggler with debts of her own; Asha Vyne, whose visions bleed through her eyes; and Captain Bryn Toller, whose crew follows him into waters that swallow ships whole. Pursued across the coast by Yven , a hunter more shadow than man , Maren must choose: complete Vyrn's map and reveal the Thorn to a world that will not survive the knowing, or break the contract and let Orris claim the salt, the stone, and every soul that calls the shoreline home. The tide is coming in. The map is almost finished. And Maren cannot remember whose blood she signed in.
