The Unbrewed Leaf
The first jar cracked before Tamsin Farrow reached the top of the hill, and she heard it through the cobbles like a finger circling the rim of a cold cup. She did not stop. She did not look down. Forty-six jars remained in the cart, and Brineholm was waiting. Brineholm is a town that swallowed a garden whole. Tamsin's mother tended that garden for years, tending something the town now refuses to name, and when she died, the cobbles simply grew over the soil. No monument. No explanation. Just stone where leaves had been. Tamsin came to deliver what her mother left behind: forty-seven sealed jars of a brew so old its recipe predates the town's founding. But the moment the cart crested the hill, the mule stopped. Pip, a boy who shouldn't exist according to the town records, was already waiting at the gate. And Cressida Vane, a woman Tamsin has never met but whose name appears inside every jar in ink that wasn't there on the road up, sent a letter by hand that arrived before the cart did. Now Tamsin is caught between the town that buried her mother's work and the people who want it unearthed. Old Fen, who has watched Brineholm for longer than anyone alive, tells her the jars are not containers. They are cages. And something in them is still growing. Mayor Harwick offers protection. Seren Kael, writing from a distance Tamsin can't yet name, offers a warning. The moon turns in three nights. When it does, the unbrewed leaf will steep itself in whatever water is nearest, and Brineholm will finally taste what it took. Tamsin must decide whether to break the seal or let the town keep its secret, and whether the cost of either choice is something she can carry back down the hill.
