The Hollow Ledger

The chip hit the felt at 1:47 AM and the sound was wrong. At a backroom poker table where fortunes change on the turn of a card, Mara has learned to read men the way most people read faces. So when a half-dollar lands with a wet, sliding thud instead of a clean snap, she knows something has been added to the game that isn't chips or chance.
