What the Quiet Keeps

by Eli Vance

When Marcus Hollowell's truck crested the rise above Sablehaven on the afternoon of a funeral, Sheriff Dale Mercer watched from the post office porch and felt the town's long-held silence begin to splinter. Hollowell has come home after years away, his bed loaded with warped lumber and older, unpayable debts, and his return sends a ripple of unease through the Morland family, the Beckett clan, and every eye that has watched the harbor fog roll in for decades. As the salt mist thickens around the village, Sheriff Mercer finds himself caught between the grieving Morlands, Victor, Eleanor, and their son Theo, and the suspicious Becketts, led by the mercurial Jonah and his wife Della. Park ranger Otis Cole knows the wooded edges of Sablehaven better than anyone, while state police lieutenant Anne Halsey arrives from outside, bringing unwelcome questions. The church Father Paul Aldred tends cannot quiet the whispers, and Edith Marrow, Hannah Briggs, and Nora Whitfield each guard their own fragment of a truth no one will speak aloud. The deeper Mercer digs, the more the present-day funeral seems to mirror an older death the town agreed to forget. As the fog closes in and Iris Callahan presses for answers Hollowell will not give, every buried secret becomes a suspect. In Sablehaven, the quiet has been keeping something, and now it is running out of room to hide.
