Best agent sandboxes in 2026: 8 vendors priced, 2 we could not rank

Best is doing a lot of work in the query this piece answers, so here is the scope up front: this is a pricing comparison, not a vibes ranking. Ten vendors, one workload shape (2 vCPU plus 4 GiB per sandbox), three monthly volumes, computed by the same cost engine that backs our comparison tool from prices captured 2026-08-27. Northflank is cheapest at every workload ($6.67 at 100 hours, $33.33 at 500, $133.32 at 2,000). Modal, the name behind half the sandbox pricing queries we see, sits 6th at 3.6x the cheapest. And two vendors are unranked, on purpose: Morph publishes no verifiable rate card and Fly Machines prices bundles that do not decompose, so quoting either would mean inventing numbers.

The board at the default workload

Monthly totals from the sandbox cost engine at the tool default: 500 sandbox-hours, 2 vCPU plus 4 GiB each. Catalog captured 2026-08-27. Unranked rows carry the reason, not a number.

Two rows deserve a second look. Daytona and E2B tie to the cent ($82.80) because their captured rates are identical ($0.05040 per vCPU-hour plus $0.01620 per GiB-hour); the table breaks the tie alphabetically and the honest tiebreaker is free credits, where Daytona's $200 doubles E2B's $100. And Modal's row prices the Sandbox rate card specifically ($0.07100 plus $0.02400): Modal's general CPU functions are much cheaper and a different product, and mixing the two cards is the easiest way to misprice this comparison.

The crossover: flat self-host against metered clouds

The same workload shape at three monthly volumes. The self-host row is flat because it is a $153.59 host, not a meter.
Vendor100 hrs500 hrs2,000 hrs
Northflank$6.67$33.33$133.32
Modal$23.80$119.00$476.00
Self-host Firecracker (Hetzner)$153.59$153.59$153.59

Self-hosting looks absurd at 100 hours ($153.59 against Northflank's $6.67), breaks even with Runloop around 500 hours, and takes second place overall by 2,000 hours. Past about 2,300 sandbox-hours a month the flat host beats even Northflank. The engine's own caveat travels with this row: a dedicated host's monthly price is a floor that ignores ops labor, idle time, and multi-region needs, so treat $153.59 as the cheapest self-hosting can be, not what it will be.

What price misses

  • Free credits decide trials, not bills. Daytona's $200 and E2B's $100 cover the evaluation; Runloop's $50, Beam's $30 and Modal's $30 cover a weekend. Northflank records none, which matters exactly once, at signup.
  • Billing granularity decides short sandboxes. Beam bills per millisecond and Cloudflare per 10 milliseconds against the field's per-second standard, so spiky sub-second workloads reorder the board this piece cannot show without your trace.
  • Modal has two rate cards and only one is priced here. The Sandbox card ($0.00003942 per core-second plus $0.00000667 per GiB-second) is the product this piece compares; the general CPU functions card is much cheaper and a different product. Do not confuse the two cards.
  • The unranked rows are load-bearing honesty. Morph renders its pricing client-side with no rate constants the capture could re-verify, and Fly Machines prices named CPU and RAM bundles that do not decompose into a per-vCPU plus per-GiB pair. Both render here with the reason instead of a number.

The honest summary: Northflank wins on price at every workload we priced, Daytona wins the tie with E2B on free credits, Modal is mid-pack on its Sandbox card, and self-hosting wins past about 2,300 hours if you value your ops time at zero. Run your own hours and sandbox size through the comparison tool, which recomputes this board for your shape instead of ours.
