Best OpenRouter alternatives in 2026: 10 services, rechecked

Nobody searches for the best OpenRouter alternative because OpenRouter is broken. They search because the deal has a shape they want to change: one key and one bill in exchange for traffic that transits a middleman, metering in credits that never convert to a flat rate, and a free tier of 50 req/day that fits a weekend project and nothing bigger. This piece names the alternatives that change that shape, with each free tier quoted from the provider's own page and checked in the last week of October 2026. The two tables below are generated from our provider catalog of 48 services, so they cannot drift from the data they claim: three hosted gateways that do OpenRouter's job differently, and seven direct provider APIs with free tiers.

The other hosted gateways

A hosted gateway earns its place here only if it routes across providers: one integration, many models, somebody else's uptime page. Three catalog entries clear that bar with a captured source and a late-October verification date. OpenRouter itself rides first as the baseline. If you want the routes view instead of the services view (bring your own keys, self-hosted, direct-in-tools), our comparison page covers the four approaches side by side.

Direct provider APIs with free tiers

The other way to replace a gateway is to skip it: call the provider directly and pay list price with no spread. Seven direct APIs in the catalog carry a free tier with a captured source. The free tier is never the whole story (rate limits, model coverage, and verification requirements differ), so read the conditions as the actual offer, not the headline. Cloudflare's 10K neurons/day and Ollama's 3 concurrent requests on cloud pay-as-you-go show how differently free can be shaped.

What we left out, and why

  • GitHub Models is retired: its playground, model catalog, inference API and BYOK are unavailable to all customers since 2026-07-30, per the catalog entry. A retired service is not an alternative.
  • OpenCode, Kilo Code, Agnes AI and Command Code sit in the catalog's aggregator category, but they are coding tools and subscriptions, not multi-model gateways. Recommending them as OpenRouter replacements would answer a different question than the one asked.
  • AIRouter, Synthetic and Venice look like gateways, but the catalog carries no captured source URL for their current terms, so we name them here without quoting terms we cannot point at. Unsourced claims do not go in tables.
  • DeepSeek is a paid-only API: its pricing page advertises no free tier, trial or new-account credit. If your use fits in a free tier, start there; if it does not, price the job against paid direct APIs before you pay a gateway spread.
  • Mistral's free tier is the Le Chat consumer product; La Plateforme API is a separate pay-per-token product. Consumer free and API free are different offers, and this piece is about API access.
  • Self-hosting is a deployment choice, not a service swap. We compared OpenRouter vs LiteLLM separately, including the 2am cost of owning the routing layer.

How to pick

  • Stay with gateways when one bill matters more than unit price: pick the gateway whose free tier covers your trial (OpenRouter's 50 req/day, LLM Gateway's no-card tier, SiliconFlow's rate-limited free models) and compare per-model pricing before you commit volume.
  • Go direct when you live on one or two models: Groq for speed, Google AI Studio for Gemini, Z.AI for GLM, NVIDIA NIM for whatever is featured this month. Provider list price, no spread, your traffic touches one vendor.
  • Go local when the data cannot leave the building: Ollama is free local inference, and nothing leaves to meter because nothing leaves.
  • Revisit quarterly. Free tiers rotate (OpenRouter's pool does), trial quotas expire, and today's paid route reprices. The tables above regenerate from the catalog; the date column tells you when we last looked.

The short version: OpenRouter's deal is convenience at a spread. If you want the same deal cheaper, the gateway table is your shortlist; if you want no deal at all, the direct table is. Either way, start from the free tier that fits and read the conditions before the headline. The full provider directory carries all 48 services with billing-model and credit-card columns, and if you want a second opinion on a specific setup, ask the assistant.
