OVHcloud vs AWS object storage in 2026: $0 egress vs $90 per TB
Two object stores, both S3-compatible, separated by one line item: OVHcloud charges $0.00 per TB of egress and S3 charges $90.00. At 5 TB stored and 5 TB served the engine prices OVHcloud at $40.55 against S3 Standard at $555.88, from prices captured 2026-09-01: a 13.7x gap, almost all of it the $441.00 of traffic on S3's bill. OVHcloud ranks 8th of 27 vendors at that workload; S3 ranks 25th. Unlike our Hetzner duel, there is no base fee here, so OVHcloud wins the smallest workload too.
The board at five workloads
| Stored + egress | OVHcloud | S3 Standard | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.1 TB + 0.1 TB | $0.81 | $2.19 | OVHcloud (2.7x) |
| 0.5 TB + 0.5 TB | $4.06 | $47.38 | OVHcloud (11.7x) |
| 1 TB + 1 TB | $8.11 | $103.88 | OVHcloud (12.8x) |
| 5 TB + 5 TB | $40.55 | $555.88 | OVHcloud (13.7x) |
| 20 TB + 20 TB | $162.21 | $2,250.89 | OVHcloud (13.9x) |
Read the egress column first: $0.00 at every OVHcloud row, because OVHcloud bills storage only and egress is unmetered. With no base fee there is no floor for S3's free tier to slip under, so OVHcloud takes even the 0.1 TB row ($0.81 against $2.19). Storage itself is cheaper too ($8.11 against $23.00 per TB), but storage is the smaller line: at 20 TB the monthly gap is $2,088.68 ($2,250.89 against $162.21), and $1,791.00 of S3's total is traffic.
The catches, side by side
| Aspect | OVHcloud | S3 Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Base fee | None | None; 5 GB free tier (12 months) |
| Storage rate | $8.11/TB | $23.00/TB |
| Egress rate | $0.00/TB | $90.00/TB |
| Regions | EU, US | US, EU, AP, SA |
| SLA | 99.9% | 99.9% |
| Durability | 99.999999999% (11 9s 3-Replica) | 99.999999999% (11 9s) |
| S3-compatible | Yes | Yes |
| Data residency | 100% EU Sovereign (France & Germany) | US Cloud Act (Global regions) |
Catch one is geography with a footnote. OVHcloud serves EU and US regions at one identical price in all of them, but the catalog carries an APAC-entity-contract caveat running through the end of 2026, and there is no APAC or South American region at all. Catch two is the durability fine print: read the strings closely, because OVHcloud's eleven 9s are 3-replica while the multi-zone tier (Standard 3-AZ, $15.70/TiB for the first 50 TiB) is a separate, pricier product. Catch three is the corollary of the headline: if you serve almost no egress, the gap shrinks to the storage-rate ratio alone, and the cheapest storage-only vendors undercut both of these.
When S3 still wins
- In APAC and South America, where OVHcloud has no region and S3 has two continents of them.
- Inside the AWS ecosystem: S3 Intelligent-Tiering, Lambda event notifications, and the gold-standard API the whole industry clones. OVHcloud's own ecosystem pitch is free EU and US egress and water-cooled green servers, which is a different list for a different buyer.
- When the exit is priced in. Moving 20 TB out of S3 costs $1,800.00 in egress alone at $0.09 per GB, so an existing S3 estate pays a toll to leave that a greenfield project never faces.
Switching costs almost nothing, except the exit
Both sides speak the S3 API, so a move is a data copy, not a rewrite: same SDKs, same tooling, versioning and object lock available on both ends. The one bill for leaving is the egress row above, which is exactly why the workload board prices egress separately instead of folding it into a blended rate. Price the exit before you price the destination.
The honest summary: OVHcloud's free egress wins every row of this board, and the decision is regions and availability tiers, not price. If your traffic stays in the EU or US and standard durability is enough, S3 is paying a premium for geography you do not use.
